Financial Aid and Scholarship Outreach Counselor

Description:Provide financial aid education and counseling to students, parents, and spouses. Assist the Associate Director in the administration, awarding and fund expenditure tracking of various federal, state, and institutional financial aid programs. Assist students in securing external financial aid resources (scholarships). Conduct scholarship/financial aid outreach to regional community partners. Assist with the preparation of reports and publication revision. Responsible for Portland Campus Financial Aid operations in the Associate Director’s absence. Assist with other enrollment service activities as needed.
Duties:• Provide information and counseling to students, parents, and spouses on all aspects of financial aid, including but not limited to:
- FAFSA and institutional application process
- Federal requirements
- Financial Aid award interpretation
- Scholarship searches, programs, benefits, and application preparation
- Loan options
- Satisfactory academic progress and institutional policies
• Maintain a database on external sources of financial aid and assist students in applying for such aid
• Collect, review, evaluate and verify financial aid data and documents submitted by students
• Assist in the administration and awarding of various federal, state, and institutional financial aid programs (Pell and state grants), including:
- Verifying and determining student eligibility for applicable Federal and State aid programs
- Determining dollar amounts for each type of aid based on student budgets and financial need
- Performing related activities
• Maintain, generate, and update student financial records using college and federal database systems. Prepare reports as required
• Administer campus endowed scholarship funds and submit proposal for Federal Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students (SDS)
• Administer Portland campus Work Study/Campus Employment programs
• Monitor compliance with specified guidelines and requirements for financial aid and/or scholarship programs including the financial verification of selected students
• Investigate and resolve problematic issues
• Create and revise department publications as necessary
• Conduct scholarships workshops, using structured curriculum, on campus and to constituents of community partners
• Represent the Portland Campus at college fairs, preview days, and other community events.
• Assist with program admission evaluations
• Assist with other enrollment service duties as assigned
Qualifications:Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting or related field and at least two years of experience assisting with the administration of financial aid and scholarship programs; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience demonstrating:
• Knowledge and understanding of financial aid terminology, programs, procedures, practices, and policies, and related federal and state laws, rules and regulations
• Skill in processing financial aid applications and applying applicable laws, rules and regulations; monitoring scholarship and loan funds;
• Demonstrated ability to conduct training and/or formal presentations
• Exceptional oral and written communication and customer service skills, and demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of a team as well as independently
• Experience operating student information systems and maintaining electronic and paper records
• Valid driver’s license and good driving record

Preferred Qualifications
• Bilingual in Spanish or another language
• Familiarity with underrepresented communities in Oregon
